As a topic before KBS, DSS and VO, identify and describe one company that adopts an MIS. Include in your discussion, how MIS help and support the company, its managers and other employees, in their problem solving and decision-making.Do this in two paragraphs at least. COPYING OF TEXTS IS DEFINITELY NOT ACCEPTABLE.Cite your reference.

Microsoft SQL Server is the leading data warehouse on the market today. But for most business professionals, it is virtually impossible to view or query this data without significant programming skills or direct IT support.MIS Plain provides the missing link. Business professionals can browse, report and analyze their data from the Excel environment they know and trust. Behind the spreadsheet interface, however, lies a direct connection to Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. Since data are stored in a central database and not in local files, MIS Plain minimizes typical spreadsheet shortcomings such as manual rekeying, time-consuming consolidations and the risk of human error.

MIS empowers business users to report and analyze information that could be a help in problem solving and could make decisions. This helps keep the information be in detailed whenever there could have changes in company, department or product structures. Most databases have been developed as IT tools and require advanced programming skills to run the simplest of queries and for that it does create an information for solving problem. MIS Plain, however, is designed for business professionals.

TOPIC: THE KNOWLEDGE - BASED SYSTEMS (KBS)

Question # 3:

1. Describe or define KBS.
is a special kind of database for knowledge management. it provides the means for the computerized collection, organization, and retrieval of knowledge.

2. Distinguish KBS from MIS.
Some knowledge bases have artificial intelligence component. these kinds of knowledge bases can suggest solution to problems sometimes based on feedback provided by the user, and are capable of learning from experience. In MIS, computers cannot create business strategies by themselves they can assist management in understanding the effects of their strategies, and help enable effective decision-making. MIS systems can be used to transform data into information useful for decision making. Computers can provide financial statements and performance reports to assist in the planning, monitoring and implementation of strategy

3. Illustrate (give examples) how KBS can improve company's competitive advantage and organizational performance.Cite your reference
A pedriatic research group at the British Columbian's Children Hospital has created a knowledge base authoring tool called iknow. it is used by clinicians at the hospital to develop knowledge rules for improving patient care in surgical operations. A decision support system then runs the rules in the operating room to assist anesthesiologists in dealing with adverse events. the knowledge base developed is machine-readable, and using iknow it is also human-readable.

Final_question n0.3

TOPIC: THE VIRTUAL OFFICE (VO)

Question # 3:

1. Describe or define VO.

is a term for shared office services, which normally includes business address, mail & courier services, phone services, fax services, answering services, web-hosting services, and meeting & conference facilities.

2. Distinguish VO from MIS.

Certain providers of virtual office services will provide other in-house or outsourced services such as corporate secretarial services, accounting services, or legal services. Professional firms such as law firms and accounting firms often provide registered address services as part of their service offerings as to MIS, the development and management of information technology tools assists executives and the general workforce in performing any tasks related to the processing of information. MIS and business systems are especially useful in the collation of business data and the production of reports to be used as tools for decision making.

3. Illustrate (give examples) how VO can improve company's competitive advantage and organizational performance.Cite your reference.
if every piece of information in your company were right at your fingertips, just think what you could accomplish. but partial information is only partially valuable: unwiedy documents such as faxws, e-mails, oversizes drawings and correspondence sometimes elude paper-based or less sophisticated electronic archiving systems. so with virtual office, you will have the means to store everything from spreadsheets, letters, emails and invoices and purchase orders and contracts to E- size drawings.

Final_question n0.2

TOPIC: THE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM (DSS)Question # 3:

1. Describe or define DSS.
it attempts to integrate the decision maker, the data base, and the quantitative models being used.

2. Distinguish DSS from MIS.
DSS is extensively used in business and management. Executive dashboard and other business performance software allow faster decision making, identification of negative trends, and better allocation of business resources. MIS provide a valuable function in that they can collate into coherent reports unmanageable volumes of data that would otherwise be broadly useless to decision makers. By studying these reports decision-makers can identify patterns and trends that would have remained unseen if the raw data were consulted manually. MIS systems can also use these raw data to run simulations – hypothetical scenarios that answer a range of ‘what if’ questions regarding alterations in strategy.

3. Illustrate (give examples) how DSS can improve company's competitive advantage and organizational performance.
A specific example concerns the Canadian National Railway system, which test its equipment on a regular basis using a decision support system. A problem faced by any railroad is worn-out or defective rails, which can result in hundreds of derailments per year. Under a DSS, CN managed to decrease the incidence of derailment at the same time other companies were experiencing an increase.

3. Decision support systems can potentially help a firm create a cost advantage. Decision support systems can provide many benefits including improving personal efficiency and reducing staff needs, expediting problem solving and increasing organizational control. Managers who want to create a cost advantage should search for situations where decision processes seem slow or tedious and where problems reoccur or solutions are delayed or unsatisfactory. In some cases, DSSs can reduce costs where decision makers have high turnover and training is slow and cumbersome, and in situations where activities, departments and projects are poorly controlled.
Also, DSSs can create a major cost advantage by increasing efficiency or eliminating value chain activities. For example, a bank or mortgage loan firm may reduce costs by using a new DSS to consolidate the number of steps and minimize the number of staff hours needed to approve loans. Technology breakthroughs can sometimes continue to lower process costs, and rivals who imitate an innovative DSS may nullify or remove any advantage.

Research one company from the Internet and describe their MIS strategic plan in 1-2 paragraphs. Discuss too the impact of this strategic plan on the company's management, competitors, customers and the company as a whole.Evaluate how can this strategic plan be applied to any local company in the Philippines. Discuss too the possible effect on the company.Include your reference.

Many MIS solutions are available to print service providers, deciding which is right for your company is a process best approached by determining the needs of your particular business. Some organizations may need to employ an entry-level system to utilize basic modules such as job tracking, invoicing, accounts receivable, and job costing. Other organizations need a more sophisticated, high-end system, featuring a complete function set including custom functions to achieve maximum efficiency and cost-benefit.
"The concept as we define it refers to the use of computer technology to help manage every aspect of the print business," says Scott St. Cyr, principal, Cyrious Software. "This starts with the sales force management and CRM, continued through estimating and quoting, handles the details of production and delivery management, and then ties that back into accounting and marketing," he states.
It is important to choose a MIS well tailored to meet your needs. Quick printers and small commercial shops will need a different solution than a large commercial printer or in-plant operation. Those who offer both offset and digital equipment need to take that into account as well. Printers offering specialty services such as large format, packaging, labels, or web offset need to ensure the management system they choose is equipped to handle these services.

Question no. 5

As a future manager, What is your computer ethics program? Justify each activity.

As a future manager, it is important to establish a computer ethics program in order to keep the good reputation of the company and so that employees would know their responsibilities and limitations in using the computer.
The following is my computer ethics program:

1. All employees of the company should not use the computers to harm other people. For example, it is bad to steal and destroy other people’s books and notebooks, it is equally bad to access and destroy their files.
2. Anyone should not snoop around in other people's files: Reading other people’s e-mail messages is as bad as opening and reading their letters: This is invading their privacy. Obtaining other people’s non-public files should be judged the same way as breaking into their rooms and stealing their documents. Text documents on the Internet may be protected by encryption.
3. Anyone should not interfere with other people's computer work: Computer viruses are small programs that disrupt other people’s computer work by destroying their files, taking huge amounts of computer time or memory, or by simply displaying annoying messages. Generating and consciously spreading computer viruses is unethical.
4. Anyone is not allowed to use the name of the company in any transaction without the authorization of the company.

If you are just a student of RMMC and not currently working, cite a manual procedure here in our school which you prefer to computerize. Describe how this system should function and how can this help the employees and the students of RMMC.

As a student of RMMC, I would like to have a computerized library system wherein students can easily avail/use the library facilities. Example: Students can borrow books wherein there is no need to fill-up borrowing slip to log-out the books in case they want to photocopy it. They would just swipe their library cards on the computer to encode the code number of the books.

Question # 3

Justify or contradict these trends by citing examples.

MIS Trends:

*MIS users are more knowledgeable.
*More computing power is available to the user.
*Resistance to the implementation of emerging MIS is subsiding.
*Connectivity
*MIS is becoming one of the primary means of increasing productivity.
*Companies are using MIS as a competitive strategy.
*MIS is becoming integral to the decision-making process.
*The end user is becoming the focus of MIS activity.

I definitely agree with these trends because information is very important. Having the right informations at the right time will help companies in making strategies to be able to become more advantage and competitive from others. Of course if you are an MIS user you are more knowledgeable and informative compare to those who are not using, in a sense that, informations are just one-click away. For example in the business industry, it is very important that the company knows what is happening or having right information so that they will excel in all aspects and become more productive. Information is use in decision-making that aid the processes of planning and control. Those industries who are implementing the most advance and most competitive infos against their competitors would result to higher revenues.

Information is very important in making planning and decision-making in the companies.

The concentration in Information Management teaches both general managers and information system professionals how to leverage information technology to improve organizational strategy, operations, innovation, and effectiveness.
Computer and information systems managers play a vital role in the technological direction of their organizations. They do everything from constructing the business plan to overseeing network security to directing Internet operations.
Computer and information systems managers plan, coordinate, and direct research and design the computer-related activities of firms. They help determine both technical and business goals in consultation with top management, and make detailed plans for the accomplishment of these goals. For example, working with their staff, they may develop the overall concepts of a new product or service, or may identify how an organizations computing capabilities can effectively aid project management.
